Grammar & Spelling

Scriptorium ships with a complete grammar, style, and spell checker (powered by LanguageTool) that runs locally on your machine — no text is sent anywhere.

Note

Grammar checking is available in the desktop app. Turn it on per project and set the project’s language in Project Settings.

Supported languages

15 languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, and Polish (with regional variants).

How it works

As you write, issues are underlined with wavy lines about a second after you stop typing. Colors tell you the kind of issue:

Fixing issues

Click an underlined word or phrase to open the suggestion popover:

• Pick a correction to apply it in place.
• Add to dictionary — teach the checker your character names and invented words. The dictionary is per project, so your fantasy vocabulary doesn’t leak into your other work.
• Ignore — dismiss a specific issue permanently for this project.

Tip

Add your world’s proper nouns to the dictionary early — it declutters the editor and makes real typos stand out.

Privacy

The checker runs as a local process on your computer. It works offline and never transmits your text.
