AI Rewrite & Synonyms

Scriptorium includes a writing assistant powered by a language model that runs entirely on your computer. It can rephrase a clumsy sentence, tighten a bloated paragraph, or suggest synonyms for a word — and your manuscript never leaves your machine.

  1. Select some text and click the Sparkles button in the editor toolbar (or go to Settings → AI Plugins).
  2. Click Install — the model is a one-time ~2 GB download, with a progress indicator.
  3. Once installed, the assistant is ready and works fully offline.
  1. Select the prose you want to work on.
  2. Click the Sparkles button in the toolbar.
  3. Pick a preset:
    • Rephrase — say the same thing differently
    • Make shorter — tighten the prose
    • Expand — develop the passage further
    • More tense — raise the tension
    • Remove clichés — replace tired phrasing
  4. Watch the rewrite stream into a preview — your original text is untouched while you read it.
  5. Choose Replace to apply it, or Discard to keep your original.

For single words, use the lookup in the floating toolbar:

  1. Select a word and click Synonyms.
  2. Get context-aware synonym suggestions — pick one to swap it in.
  3. Switch to Define to see a definition instead.

Generation happens locally, with no network calls — the model reads only the text you selected. What you write stays yours.
