Where Your Data Lives
Scriptorium is local-first. Every project, manuscript, note, and world-building detail is stored in a database on your own computer. There is no cloud sync service in the middle, and we never store your writing on our servers.
What stays on your device
Section titled “What stays on your device”- All projects and their contents — manuscripts, entities, notes, tables, mindmaps, timelines, maps
- Version history and snapshots
- Imported files and images
- AI models you install, and everything they process
What we store about you
Section titled “What we store about you”Only what’s needed to operate your account:
- Your email address and login credentials
- Your license/purchase status
- Messages you choose to send through the feedback feature
This account data is hosted in Europe and protected under GDPR.
What this means in practice
Section titled “What this means in practice”The good:
- Your writing works offline and is never held hostage by a server.
- Nothing you write is sent to any cloud AI provider — AI features run entirely on your machine.
- No one but you can read your work.
The responsibility:
- Because your data lives only on your device, you should set up backups. If your computer is lost or its disk fails, Scriptorium cannot recover your work for you.
Moving to a new computer
Section titled “Moving to a new computer”Backups double as a migration tool: create a backup on the old machine, install Scriptorium on the new one, sign in, and restore from the archive.
