Backup & Restore
Because Scriptorium is local-first, backups are your safety net. One setup, and your entire workspace is archived automatically to a folder of your choice.
How it works
Section titled “How it works”A backup is a single .scriptorium archive containing everything: all projects, manuscripts, entities, notes, images, files, and custom fonts.
You pick the destination folder. Choose one synced by iCloud Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or similar, and your cloud provider’s own app uploads the archives — Scriptorium itself never talks to any cloud service. A local folder or USB drive works too.
Setting up automatic backups
Section titled “Setting up automatic backups”- Open the backup settings.
- Choose a destination folder.
- Set the interval — anywhere from every 5 minutes to once a day.
- Set the retention — how many archives to keep (1–100). Older archives are rotated out automatically.
Each archive is written atomically and verified with a checksum, so a backup is either complete and valid or not kept at all.
You can also trigger a manual backup whenever you want — for example right before a big restructuring.
Restoring
Section titled “Restoring”Two ways to restore from an archive:
Full restore
Section titled “Full restore”Replaces your entire local workspace with the archive’s contents. This is the tool for moving to a new computer: back up on the old machine, install Scriptorium and sign in on the new one, then restore.
Selective restore
Section titled “Selective restore”Restore all projects, a selection, or a single project from an archive without touching anything else. Perfect for recovering one project you deleted or broke, while your current work stays as-is. Each project is restored independently, so a problem with one never affects the others.
